Within your will. O Lord, all things are established, and there is none that can resist your will.  For you have made all things, the heaven and the earth, and all that is held within the circle of heaven; you are the Lord of all.
1st Reading (Isaiah 5:1-7)  The vineyard of the Lord God of hosts is the House of Israel.
Psalm The vineyard of the Lord is the House of Israel.
2nd Reading (Philippians 4:6-9)  The God of peace will be with you.

Gospel (Matthew 21:33-43)   He will lease the vineyard to other tenants.
Children Jesus tells a story about a man who rented out his vineyard.  When the harvest came, the tenants would not pay the man his rent.  The man sent his servants, and then his son, to collect the rent.  But the people beat and killed them.  Jesus says that the man will give the vineyard to better people.

MISSION MONTH

We have a job to do this October as we celebrate Mission Month. There are approximately 1,500 Irish born missionaries working in more than 80 countries.

They continue to spread the Gospel through their work, their deep commitment to the people they serve and their Faith. In essence, they lead by example and have helped to change, for the better, millions of lives all over the globe.

It is fitting then that the theme for this years’ Mission Month of October is ‘That they may have life’…life in all its richness and dignity. The richness of knowing the Gospel and Jesus Christ and the dignity of having food to eat, a roof to sleep under and work to go to.

Through their work, our missionaries strive to make all this a reality for the people they serve.

‘The Society for the Propagation of the Faith’ organises the Mission Sunday collection in all Churches nationwide, which this year takes place on the 19th October.

We are invited to reflect on our call to bring Christ to others, while remembering to pray and to assist the young churches that they may have the spiritual and financial resources to grow and in turn announce the Good News.

For further information on the world of the Propagation of the Faith or to make a donation please visit www.wmi.ie.

SAINT COLMCILLE’S GUIDE UNIT

Last Saturday, myself and two of my Guide friends Ella and Sophie, along with my parents went to Farmleigh House in Dublin to collect my Chief Commissioner’s award. When we arrived, we had a look around the beautiful grounds, then signed in at reception with Katriana, Rebecca and Philomena, our leaders. We had a quick practice before the real thing, and my friend Sophie held our Unit flag. Then it was time for the ceremony. We had a speech from a lovely woman, Orla O’Connor, the Director of The National Women’s Council of Ireland and she spoke very inspirational words about the important role women have in the world. Then it was time for me and the other members of CGI to collect our awards. My name was one of the first to be called. I walked on stage and collected my award and a certificate. I had my picture taken with Cecilia Browne, the Chief Commissioner, Orla O’Connor and Geraldine Conway, National Commissioner for Guides and then was given a beautiful bouquet of flowers! I received the silver award and I’m very happy with all the hard work I put into this project for the past year. I would like to thank my wonderful leaders for helping me work through this project and making it easier. Overall I had an amazing day in Dublin and a great Guiding experience with the award.  Cara Collins.

INCREASE IN ROAD DEATHS

The Church Leaders in Northern Ireland have received the following correspondence from the Assistant Chief Constable, Stephen Martin, of the PSNI.

Tragically so far this year 57 people have lost their lives on Northern Ireland’s roads.  This figure is the same as for the whole of 2013.  We are told that most of the deaths on our roads could be prevented.  We all share the responsibility of making our roads safer. This means slowing down, wearing our seatbelts, paying full attention to the road and never driving after drinking alcohol. It sounds simple. It makes sense. We just need to do it.

Road users may wish to sign up to the Department of Environment’s “Share the Road to Zero” programme which has one aim – zero road deaths in Northern Ireland.  Pledging is quick, easy and FREE and when you sign up, you will receive weekly road safety tips about how you and your loved ones can stay safe on our roads these coming months.

Let us pray for all those in our parish who have been affected in some way by a road death.

1st Reading (Isaiah 55:6-9)  My thoughts are not your thoughts.
Psalm The Lord is close to all who call him.
2nd Reading (Philippians 1:20-24, 27)  Life to me is Christ.
Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia!  Open our heart, O Lord, to accept the words of your Son.  Alleluia!
Gospel (Matthew 20:1-16)   Why be envious because I am generous?
Children A man went out early in the morning to hire some workers for his vineyard.  He said he would pay them a silver coin a day.  He hired more workers at nine, twelve, three and five o’clock.  At the end of the day he paid a silver coin to each of them.  The workers hired last and those who had worked in the hot sun longest all received the same.  The ones that worked longest grumbled that it wasn’t fair, but the man said he had paid them all that he had promised.

Additional volunteer helpers would be much appreciated.

ST. COLMCILLE’S SCOUT GROUP

All sections of the Scout Group have now resumed weekly meetings and each have strong membership numbers  and strong leader teams in place. Over the summer the sections were very busy with summer camps and expeditions. The Cubs camped at Castlewellan,  hiked in the Mournes and tackled the climbing wall at the Northern Ireland Mountain Centre. The Scouts held their biggest ever camp at Zellhof International Scout centre outside Salzburg, Austria. 36 Scouts and a team of 8 leaders attended. Meeting with Scouts from all over Europe, the Scouts visited Salzburg, descended into the Salt mines at Berchtesgaden, and canoed, climbed and hiked the environs of the campsite. This was without doubt one of the best ever camps in the history of the 11th. Following on from this great camp, the troop was represented at the Phoenix, the All-Ireland Scout camp craft competition, which was held at Mount Melleray, Co. Waterford. 82 patrols took part and after 4 busy and eventful days of competition, our patrol achieved 4th place overall, a fantastic achievement and one we are all very proud of. Well done to Amy Truesdale (PL), Tim Cunningham (APL), Lorcan Short, Michael O’Hare, Niamh McMordie, Oonagh Lavery, Eve Truesdale, Eve Gilsennan, Sinead Lavery and Ronan Cunningham who represented the troop and St. Colmcilles parish with such distinction. The Venture Scout expedition to Barcelona and the Pyrenees was an outstanding success, the highlight of which was an overnight hike in the mountains, sleeping in a mountain hut at 1250 meters above sea level. Each section of the Group is in good shape and looking forward to another year of scouting activities.
