ARRANGEMENTS FOR BAPTISM IN OUR PARISH

The Sacrament of Baptism is one of the most joyful occasions both for the family and the Parish and everyone is welcome.  The next Baptismal Course takes place on Tuesday 15^th September in the Iona Room from 8.00pm to 9.30pm, where parents will receive their Baptismal pack and can arrange the date for their child’s Baptism. Baptisms in the Parish take place on the first and last Sunday of each month and attendance at the course is arranged through Philomena in the Parish Office.

Faith and Life Convention

Bishop Treanor invites you to attend our second Faith and Life Convention on Saturday 26^th September in Our Lady and St Patrick’s College, Knock, Belfast beginning at 10.00am.

This year our Keynote Speaker will be Fr Brendan Comerford SJ.  He will speak to us on the theme: What hope for faith?

In the afternoon each participant will have the opportunity to take part in two workshops from a range of twenty. The workshops fill up quickly so it’s best to book now!

Perhaps the best part of the day is the pleasure of meeting up with a great crowd of committed people from all over the Diocese and beyond!

SUMMER MASS TIMES  –  there will be one Mass on a Sunday morning at 11.00am during the months of July and August.

THE MATER BOOK  –  the story of the Belfast Teaching Hospital and its Community is available in the Sacristy.  Price £10

Our Lady and St Patrick’s College, Knock –  will hold an Information Evening at 7.30pm on Thursday 3^rd September for pupils and parents seeking entry to Year 8 in September 2016.

RCIA  –  stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and is for individuals from any faith background (and none) who want to explore and enquire into the Catholic faith.  It is a weekly series of classes and discussion covering a wide range of aspects of the Catholic faith. The weekly class lasts 1½ hours.  Participants on RCIA programmes come from all walks of life, ages and backgrounds. What they all have in common is that they felt the call of God urging them to change the direction of their lives.  RCIA is also for cradle Catholics who want a deeper understanding of their Catholic faith and for Catholics who have lapsed from the practice of celebrating their faith and whom God is inviting to come back to him.  Ultimately, RCIA is a journey of faith exploration and development, culminating in the reception of the catechumens/candidates into the Catholic community at Pentecost, if after their exploration and enquiry into the Catholic faith the Holy Spirit inspires them to do so.  The RCIA programme begins at St. Mary’s, Chapel Lane on Thursday 22^nd October 2015.  Should you wish to take part, please contact Fr. SAINT COLMCILLE’S GUIDE UNIT

Caters for girls who are in Primary One and above. All sections will reopen during the month of September as follows: Cygnet section (age 5 to 6½) on Wednesday 23^rd September from 6.15pm to 7.15pm; Brigin section (age 6½ to 10½)  on Monday 7^th September from 6.30pm to 8.00pm; Guide section (age 10½ to 14)  on Wednesday 9^th September from 7.30pm to 9.00pm, and Ranger section (age 14+)  on Monday 14^th September from 8.15pm to 9.30pm. The Unit is operated completely by female volunteers, who attend relevant training courses and we are always looking to extend our team.   Anyone over the age of 18 who is willing to help us out should contact Philomena on 077 6194 3649.  Training and support will be given to any new volunteer.   At the end of June the unit had over 80 young people between all the sections.  Please think if you can help these young people continue the experience of Guiding within St. Colmcille’s Parish.  For more information please contact Philomena.

Syrian Refugees Welcome Here? –  this Wednesday evening at Edgehill Theological College, 9 Lennoxvale, Belfast, BT9 5BY.  In light of the current movement of migrant people into Europe from the Middle East and North Africa, this discussion evening will provide background information on the movement of vulnerable people and the policies regarding entry into the UK.  In particular, the event will look at the possibility of Syrian refugees being resettled locally, some of the challenges faced by refugees who are already here and how churches can respond in welcome.  The event runs from 7.00pm to 9.00pm, is free, and booking in advance is not required.

Sestina presents ‘Mein Freund ist mein’ (My Beloved is mine)  –  Dynamic young ensemble, Sestina, explore themes of life and death through liturgical works of breathtaking power and humanity by JS Bach and his family in the Ulster Museum, Belfast on Saturday 5^th  September at 7.30pm. Children	Jesus was talking to his friends. He told them that is the living bread that has come down from heaven and that his body is real food.  Jesus’ friends started arguing because they did not understand what he meant.  Jesus told them that if they eat this living bread they will enjoy life with God for ever.

THANKS – to the fifty volunteer teenagers, young adults and adults who helped one hundred children enjoy the ‘Under the Big Top’ holiday week in the parish. The children learned that trusting in God is always rewarded and that when something unpleasant happens to us, when we pray to God, He can turn it to good ! The daily themes and messages were reinforced through the daily unfolding story of Joseph in Genesis, supported by arts & crafts, singing, dance and games, all led by the volunteers.  Special thanks to Irwins Bakery and Tescos, Ballyhackamore who sponsored the snacks for the children and leaders all week. Thanks also to the Education Authority Belfast, James Brown Funeral services, The New Evangelisation Trust and Loud Mouth Media who each contributed some financial support for the children and youth summer programmes. Miss Mc Kinley kindly provided use of the school assembly hall and sports equipment, for which we were very grateful. Some photos are on display in the Church porch.

COLLECTION FOR DIOCESAN CARE HOME  –  will be taken up at all Masses this weekend.  This purpose built Diocesan Nursing Home was opened in October 1996, to provide 24 hour nursing care for the frail and elderly and the mentally infirm within a Christian environment.  The Home also provides day care facilities.  A new extension was added to the Home in 2004 bringing the total number of beds available to 86.  As a consequence of the upgrading and extension work the Home is presently £700,000 in debt.  The annual collection was established to help reduce the current debt.

artisan market  –  is starting up in Ballyhackamore in the Church Grounds next Saturday.  The market will be held every third Saturday in the month from 10.00am to 2.00pm.  This is an exciting new venture for the community of Ballyhackamore at large. It is hoped that as local people congregate together in this place on a Saturday morning, they will feel part of a community. We hope that local Christians will grasp the vision and seek to be present and active in this community. With this in mind I would like to invite you to come along to the market, to be present and to have intentional conversations with stallholders and customers alike. We hope God can use this market for His glory and the further building of His Kingdom here in Ballyhackamore.

Bangor Colloquium   –  Part 2 will take place in Luxeuil from Thursday 17^th until Saturday 19^th September.  Part 3 will be held in Bobbio from Saturday 21^st until Sunday 22^nd November.  The title of the Bangor Colloquium is “Making Europe: Columbanus and his Legacy”.

2nd Reading	(Ephesians 4:30 – 5:2) Follow Christ by loving as he loved you.

Gospel	(John 6:41-51)  I am the living bread which has come down from heaven.

CELEBRATING THE YEAR OF ST COLUMBANUS

Diocesan Pilgrimage to Luxeuil, Bregenz, St Gallen & Bobbio  –  to mark the Year of St Columbanus, Bishop Noel Treanor will lead a Diocesan Pilgrimage to sites associated with St Columbanus – Luxeuil, Bregenz, St Gallen and Bobbio from 24^th to 31^st August.  Anyone interested in taking part in the Pilgrimage is asked to contact Kieran Troy  on 00 353 5793 55050.

Bangor Colloquium   –  Part 2 will take place in Luxeuil from Thursday 17^th until Saturday 19^th September.  Part 3 will be held in Bobbio from Saturday 21^st until Sunday 22^nd November.  The title of the Bangor Colloquium is “Making Europe: Columbanus and his Legacy”.
