Click on ‘WEBCAM’ and scroll to view. The picture quality has been greatly enhanced recently. The Webcam is normally on 24 hours a day. It should also work on iphones, ipads and Android devices. The sound is normally only on during Mass and other Church services.

PARISH FAMILY

ST. JOSEPH’S PRIMARY SCHOOL­  –  welcomes Miss Frances McKinley the newly appointed Principal.  The parish wishes her every success in her new apointment at the beginning of the new school year.

FIRST FRIDAY – Father Ciaran will attend the sick and housebound in the parish this Tuesday.

HOLY HOUR  –  this Thursday evening from 7.00pm to 8.00pm in St. Peter’s Cathedral to thank God for the gift of the Eucharist and to pray for priests and vocations  All are most welcome.

BOOKING OF PAROCHIAL HALL  – Pat is available from Monday to Friday for bookings.  Parishioners wishing to book the Parochial Hall need to speak to Pat on 9067 1036 from 7.00pm to 8.00pm on these evenings.

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT  –  we can be contacted on 074 5698 9458.  Our members are Regiena Babu, Eileen Brogan, Eithne Daly, Maire Devine, Brenda McMeekin, David McMeekin, Celine Molloy, Joan Rogan and Lucy Traynor.

INTERCESSORY PRAYER TEAM  –  is a small group who meet on a weekly basis to add their voices to yours, presenting your needs to God. Requests for prayer can be made by completing a Petition Slip and placing it in the Prayer Request Box, both of which can be found in Our Lady’s Prayer Space, or by emailingcolmcilleprayer@yahoo.co.uk.  All requests are treated with the strictest confidence and you can make your request anonymously if you wish.

A SEVEN DAY CANDLE  – burns continuously at Our Lady’s Prayer Space in the Sanctuary for the intentions of a sponsor. Candles cost £5 each and this offering should be placed in the box in the wall when you light your candle.

JOIN OUR CHOIR  –  we are looking for members. Anyone can join, it doesn’t matter if you are a complete beginner or if you already know your way around a song sheet, we would be delighted to see you at a rehearsal. Don’t keep your talent to yourself, come and share it with us! Thinking about it, then why not try a few rehearsals to try it out any Wednesday evening at 7.30pm in the Church. CERTIFICATE IN LECTIO DIVINA FACILITATION  –  in Association with St. Mary’s University College, Belfast.  The Certificate in Lectio Divina Facilitation aims to equip participants to facilitate small Lectio Divina groups in a parish or community setting.  Pope Francis in his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium recommended the ancient  practice of lectio divina, a practice of prayerfully reading scripture and “allowing it to enlighten and renew us.”  This course is offered to men and women from all walks of life who have completed the Pathways course or its equivalent or who are involved in some form of prayer guidance or Scripture study. THIS WEEK

CHOIR  –  starts back this Wednesday with a social evening and will be singing from next Sunday.

ST COLMCILLE’S INDOOR BOWLING CLUB  –  we return to full action this Thursday. New members are very welcome.  We meet every Thursday  from 7.30pm to 9.30pm to run an enjoyable night of indoor bowls and supper.  If you have not played before, still come along, we have plenty of spare bowls.  You will enjoy a hearty welcome, an evening of bowls and supper – all with the compliments of the club.

OUR LADY AND ST. PATRICK’S COLLEGE, KNOCK  –  will hold an Information Evening at 7.30 pm this Thursday for pupils and parents seeking entry to Year 8 in September 2015.

COMING EVENTS

DRUMALIS  –  the parish retreat this year will take place from Saturday 13^th to Sunday 14^th September.  Anyone who is interested in going please contact Pat on 9067 1036, to book a place.

FAITH AND LIFE CONVENTION – which has arisen out of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan will take place on Saturday 20^th September in Our Lady and Saint Patrick’s College, Knock under the title: “Living the faith to make a difference”.  The keynote speaker for the day will be John Allen Jr (Religion Correspondent of the Boston Globe).  There will be an opportunity for a panel discussion and an essential element of the day will be the afternoon workshops which will explore the place of faith in many different areas of our lives.  Attendance at the day is by registration only.  Registration forms are available on www.downandconnor.org or by contacting the Living Church Office on 9069 0920.  Cost: £20 per person (incl. Lunch & Refreshments).

DIOCESAN CONVENTION  – a number of places have been secured at the Convention for young adults in mid teens to early twenties at a reduced cost of £10, which covers lunch, for a special young adult workshop. The Convention takes place on Saturday 20^th September at Our Lady and St Patrick’s school. Our young adults are encouraged to attend. SAINT COLMCILLE’S GUIDE UNIT

Caters for girls who are in Primary One and above. All sections will reopen  during the month ofSeptember as follows: Cygnet section (age 5 to 6½) on Wednesday 17^th September from 6.15pm to 7.15pm; Brigin section (age 6½ to 10½)  on Monday 8^th September from 6.30pm to 8.00pm; Guide section (age 10½ to 14)  on Wednesday 10^th September from 7.30pm to 9.00pm, and Ranger section (age 14+)  on Monday 8^th September from 8.15pm to 9.30pm. The Unit is operated completely by female volunteers, who attend relevant training courses and we are always looking to extend our leadership team.   Anyone over the age of 18 who is willing to join our leadership team should contact Philomena on 077 6194 3649.  Training and support will be given to any new volunteer.   At the end of June the unit had over 80 young people between all the sections.  Please think if you can help these young people continue the experience of Guiding within St. Colmcille’s Parish.  For more information please contact Philomena.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL VOLUNTEER APPEAL

Earlier in the year the St Colmcille’s Conference of SVP issued an appeal for new members to continue the good works of our Parish in helping other less fortunate people in our local community . Now that the summer holidays are coming to an end, we are again requesting any members of the parish who may be able to assist in giving up some free time to carry out our visitations to people in need.

Figures released by the Government this year show that three of the ten most deprived areas of the UK are located in Northern Ireland and one of those is East Belfast.

St Colmcille’s and St Matthew’s SVP Conferences jointly cover the East Belfast area. This includes the Clarawood, Braniel, Tullycarnet, Dundonald and Ballybeen areas of our Parish.

Our Conference visits people who have felt it necessary to ask for help, even when they feel ashamed to do so.

We provide financial assistance and regularly obtain white goods such as fridges, washing machines and cookers as well as furniture, beds and food vouchers. During the winter we also assist in providing heat in their accommodation.

We are a busy Conference visiting on average 6 families each week. At present, the majority of our members are near or above retirement age and this is a significant concern given the increasing demand for our services.

We need to recruit new members from our parish to strengthen the group and enable us to meet the needs of our local community.

As members of Conference, we feel that the voluntary work we do is essential, worthwhile and rewarding.

We are asking you once again to consider joining us to provide this vital service to those less fortunate than ourselves. Training can be organised for those who may be interested.

PROJECT JUSTICE  –  the Justice Committee of the Northern Ireland Assembly is currently running a public consultation on a proposed amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill that will ensure that private clinics, such as the Marie Stopes centre in Belfast, cannot legally carry out abortion.  Please sign a ‘submission postcard’ and show your support for the amendment and make clear your opposition to Marie Stopes.  Closing date for written submissions is Friday 12th September. A SERVICE OF HOPE, HEALING AND LOVE  –  in the week of World Suicide Prevention Day. Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Newcastle, County Down. Sunday 14^thSeptember at 3.00pm. This Service is for everyone, those concerned about suicide, those who may be in crisis and those who have been bereaved or affected by suicide. People of all faiths or none are welcome. Please join us in the Parish Centre afterwards for light refreshments.  If anyone wishes to speak confidentially to someone who is experienced in supporting others, this will also be available.

NATIONAL GRANDPARENTS PILGRIMAGE –  To Our Lady’s shrine at Knock takes place on Sunday 14^th September.  Blessing of the sick 2.30pm. Mass 3.00pm.  Chief  Celebrant is Archbishop Charles Brown Papal Nuncio. Everyone welcome.  Children are invited to compose a prayer for their Grandparents and send it toCGA office Castlebar St Westport Co Mayo. 1^st Reading           (Isaiah 22:19-23)  I place the key of the House of David upon his shoulder.

Psalm                    Your love , O Lord, is eternal, discard not the work of your hands.

2^nd Reading          (Romans 11:33-36)  All that exists comes from him; all is by him and for him.

Acclamation        Alleluia, alleluia!  God in Church was reconciling the world to himself, and he has entrusted to us the news that they are reconciled.  Alleluia!

Gospel                   (Matthew 16:13-20)   You are Peter, and I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.

Children               Jesus asks his disciples who they think he is.  Peters says that he thinks Jesus is the Son of God.  Jesus is happy and tells Peter that he is right.  Jesus then asks them not to tell anyone else this special secret.

BALLYHACKAMORE GOLF SOCIEY  –  the next outing will be to Mahee Island on this Sunday. The first tee is reserved from 1.00pm. The cost is £20. Members, visitors and guests will be welcomed.

COMING EVENTS

ST COLMCILLE’S INDOOR BOWLING CLUB  –  the club resumes its normal schedule on Thursday 4^th September.  New members are always welcome and will be well looked after. We have plenty of spare bowls so no gear is needed. We bowl every  each Thursday evening from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and enjoy a nice supper and good craic.  It only costs £5.00 to join for the year and a small weekly fee.

Entrance              Turn your eyes, O God, our shield; and look on the face of your anointed   Antiphon         one; one day within your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere.

1^st Reading           (Isaiah 56:1, 6-7)  I will bring foreigners to my holy mountain.

Psalm                    Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.

2^nd Reading          (Romans 11:13-15, 29-32)  With Israel, God never takes back his gifts or revokes his choice.

Acclamation        Alleluia, alleluia!  The sheep that belongs to me listen to my voice, says the Lord, I know them and they follow me.  Alleluia!

Gospel                   (Matthew 15:21-28)   Woman, you have great faith.

Children               Jesus was being pestered by a woman who wanted Jesus to heal her daughter.  The woman was not a Jew so at first Jesus did not do what she asked.  She knelt as Jesus’ feet and begged him.  Seeing that she really believed in him, Jesus healed her daughter, telling the woman that she had great faith.  This reading shows that anyone can believe in Jesus and feel this love in their lives.

Communion        With the Lord there is mercy; in him is plentiful redemption.

PARISH WEBCAM

Parishioners are invited to view parish Masses and other parish services with the help of the parish website: www.st-colmcilles.net where you will find the Webcam. Click on ‘WEBCAM’ and scroll to view. The picture quality has been greatly enhanced recently. The Webcam is normally on 24 hours a day. It should also work on iphones, ipads and Android devices. The sound is normally only on during Mass and other Church services.

ARRANGEMENTS FOR BAPTISM IN OUR PARISH

The Sacrament of Baptism is one of the most joyful occasions both for the family and the Parish and everyone is welcome.  The next Baptismal Course takes place this Tuesday evening in the Iona Room from 8.00pm to 9.30pm, where parents will receive their Baptismal pack and can arrange the date for their child’s Baptism. Baptisms in the Parish take place on the first and last Sunday of each month and attendance at the course is arranged through Philomena in the Parish Office.

CERTIFICATE IN LECTIO DIVINA FACILITATION  –  in Association with St. Mary’s University College, Belfast.  The Certificate in Lectio Divina Facilitation aims to equip participants to facilitate small Lectio Divina groups in a parish or community setting.  Pope Francis in his apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium recommended the ancient  practice of lectio divina, a practice of prayerfully reading scripture and “allowing it to enlighten and renew us.”  This course is offered to men and women from all walks of life who have completed the Pathways course or its equivalent or who are involved in some form of prayer guidance or Scripture study. DECEASED –   We pray for the repose of the souls of Brian O’Reilly, the relative of a parishioner, Roseanne Smyth, Tommy McQuillian and Joan Callaghan who died recently.  We also remember Ann Carroll and Raymond Hamill, whose  month’s mind occurs this weekend and for all those whose anniversaries occur at this time of year especially:

MONEY MATTERS                        

Many thanks to all who contributed so generously to the collections.

COLLECTION FOR DIOCESAN CARE HOME  –  will be taken up at all Masses this weekend.  This purpose built Diocesan Nursing Home was opened in October 1996, to provide 24 hour nursing care for the frail and elderly and the mentally infirm within a Christian environment.  The Home also provides day care facilities.  A new extension was added to the Home in 2004 bringing the total number of beds available to 86.  As a consequence of the upgrading and extension work the Home is presently £700,000 in debt.  The annual collection was established to help reduce the current debt.

 

THIS WEEK

SUMMER PROGRAMME  – for children and youth in August.  Application forms and more details can be found in the Church porch. The programme includes: day trip to M&D’s Theme Park in Scotland; adventure activities day; sports coaching; and a youth residential retreat. BALLYHACKAMORE GOLF SOCIEY  –  the next outing will be to Mahee Island on next Sunday. The first tee is reserved from 1.00pm. The cost is £20. Members, visitors and guests will be welcomed.

RCIA AT ST. MARY’S, CHAPEL LANE

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process of evangelization that is made available at St Mary’s, Chapel Lane. It is a weekly process of talks and discussion covering a wide range of aspects of the Catholic faith and the scripture reading for the following Sunday. Meetings take place in the Fr. Hugh O’Donnell Room at St Mary’s on Thursday evenings from 7.00pm till 8.30pm.

RCIA is for individuals from any faith background (and none) who want to explore and enquire into the catholic faith. Participants come from all walks of life, ages and backgrounds. What they all have in common is that they felt the call of God urging them to change the direction of their lives.  RCIA is also for cradle Catholics who want a deeper understanding of their Catholic faith and for Catholics who have lapsed from the practice of celebrating their faith with the community at Sunday Mass and whom God is inviting to come back to him.

Ultimately, the RCIA journey of faith exploration and development culminates in the reception of the catechumens/candidates* into the catholic community at Pentecost, if after their exploration and enquiry into the Catholic faith the Holy Spirit inspires them to do so.

The RCIA process begins at St. Mary’s, Chapel Lane, in October. It is open to persons from any parish. Many people, young and old, are searching for a deeper meaning in life.

VIGIL FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST  –  please come and join us in prayer for the terrible situations in Iraq, Syria, Palestine and Israel next Saturday in St Peter’s Cathedral.  We will begin at 7.30pm with Adoration through to 10.45 pm and finish with a Mass for Peace at 11.00 pm.  Different groups will lead us in prayer and reflection during the hours of Adoration.

BELFAST COMMUNITY GOSPEL CHOIE CONCERT– in Aid of Cancer Research to be held in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Newcastle next Sunday at 7:30pm.  This is a unique opportunity to see this renowned choir who have just returned from a successful tour in New York.  This will be their first concert in Newcastle and they are performing for the very worthy cause of Cancer Research.  Tickets are £10 and are available at the door.  For further details please contact A Bingham 4372 5837 or J Coburn 4372 4201.

ST. PROJECT JUSTICE –  the Justice Committee of the Northern Ireland Assembly is currently running a public consultation on a proposed amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill that will ensure that private clinics, such as the Marie Stopes centre in Belfast, cannot legally carry out abortion. Please sign a ‘submission postcard’ and show your support for the amendment and make clear your opposition to Marie Stopes. Closing date for written submissions is Friday 12th September. NATIONAL GRANDPARENTS PILGRIMAGE –  To Our Lady’s shrine at Knock takes place on  Sunday 14^th September.   Blessing of the sick 2.30 pm.
